Abstract

Georthocladius Strenzke, 1941 (Diptera: Chironomidae) was identified for the first time from Bulgaria. Larvae of G. cf. luteicornis (Goetghebuer, 1941) were found in the littoral zone of four high-altitude lakes in the Rila and Pirin Mountains. In addition, we recorded Heterotrissocladius marcidus (Walker, 1856) and Corynoneura cf. lobata Edwards, 1924, which represent new records for the Bulgarian fauna. The first national record of the genus, along with the taxonomic composition of the associated chironomid assemblages, indicate that Bulgarian high-altitude lakes support highly diverse chironomid communities and that these ecosystems may harbour additional taxa that have not yet been documented in the Bulgarian invertebrate fauna.
